Symptom.
A. No heat or light. This will almost certainly mean that the fuse needs replacing or the wall socket is faulty.
• Fit a new 13 amp fuse (brown) in the plug, first having made sure that the fuse works by testing it in a table
lamp or similar product.
• Check that the wall socket is not faulty by using another appliance in it.
• Is the fire on an extension lead? Heaters must not be used on extension leads as they are not rated for the
power required.
B. Heat comes on but no light. The lamps will need replacing, see Replacing Lamp above. First check that
the new lamp works by testing it in a table lamp.
C. Light comes on but no heat. Are all 3 switches on? If the fan blows warm for a short time then blows cold
it implies that the air intake and the blades of the fan need cleaning, see Cleaning above.
D. Plug gets hot. This is nearly always the wall socket which is at fault. Check the fire in another socket, it will
not get as warm. Stop using the faulty socket immediately and call an electrician, many house fires are caused by
faulty sockets overheating.
E. Lamps do not last very long. If the lamps do not last very long there is nothing wrong with the fire. It is not
possible to predict the life of a lamp, some burn out more quickly than others.
F. Noise from the fan. Unfortunately there is always some noise from the fan, we do our utmost to reduce this,
but they will never be silent.
G. 'Flame does not flicker' . Remove the fibreglass fuel bed see replacing lamp. Check that the spinners are not
catching on anything. Remove the spinner and run a blunt pencil around the inside of the plastic centre cap (this
deposits a little graphite which acts a lubricant.) Sharpen the point of the pin with a piece of emery. If necessary,
re-shape the spinner by placing it upside down in a mug and gently pushing the centre downwards. Re-assemble
before using the appliance.
Guarantee.
Any fault (other than that caused by abnormal treatment, or damage caused by leaving the ashpan cover in front
of the fire whilst the heater is on) which occurs within 12 months of the date of purchase, will be corrected free of
charge. This does not apply to lamp failures whose life, regretfully, we can not predict. In the event of complaint,
please phone us for guidance, should a repair be necessary the appliance will need returning to the place of
purchase.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
FOR
MODELS IN THE
224 & 292 RANGE OF
ELECTRIC FIRES
INSTRUCTIONS
Before using your Burley fire, please read all these instructions, they are to familiarise you with the
controls so that you will get the most from the appliance and ensure your safety. Improper use of this fire
will negate your guarantee. Please keep the instructions in a safe place, you will need them in the future to
carry out basic maintenance.
Installation
1. Some appliances have ashpan covers to hide the heater and controls when not in use. These covers
must not be left in front of the heater outlet when the fire is on. Doing so could create a fire risk, it will
cause the element to overheat and fail. Damage so caused is not covered by the guarantee.
2. Read all the instructions before using this heater.
3. Do not locate this heater immediately below a socket outlet.
4. Do not use this heater in the immediate surround of a bath, a shower, or a swimming pool.
Avoid any contact with water.
5. Do not cover this heater, or obstruct the air inlet or outlet, otherwise there is a risk of
overheating.
6. Do not lead the cord in front of the air outlet.
7. Do not trap the cable, ensure that the fire is not standing on the cable.
8. Some carpets can be discoloured by heat, the fire must stand on a firm, non-combustible
surface which extends at least 150mm clear to the front of the fire.
9. Do not use the fire on an extension lead. If the cable is not long enough ask an electrician to
fit a longer cable rated for 13 amps minimum.
10. Do not permanently fix the appliance, it will need removing for servicing.
11. Parts of this heater is hot when in use. To avoid burns, do not touch hot surfaces. Keep com-
bustible materials such as furniture, pillows, bedding, paper, clothes, curtains at least three
feet away from the front sides and rear.
12. Do not run the cable under a carpet or rug etc. arrange cord away from traffic areas and
where it will not be tripped over.
13. Extreme caution and a guard is necessary when any heater is used near children, the elderly
or the infirm and whenever the heater is left operating and unattended.
14. Do not use outdoors.
15. Do not operate any heater with a damaged cord or plug or after the heater malfunctions, or
after it has been dropped or damaged in any manner. Return the appliance to an authorised
service agent for examination and repair.
16. Do not insert or allow foreign objects to enter the appliance as this may cause electric shock
or fire, or damage the appliance.
17. This is an imitation electric fire and must not be used for a real fire.
Controls.
A. The switch marked controls the lamp(s) and must be turned on before the heater switches will operate. 0-1
B. The switch marked with 1 red bar starts the fan with 1kw of heat.
C. With the first 2 switches on, the third switch marked with 1-11 red bar brings on the 2
nd
kW of heat. The
fan does not go any faster.
Commissioning your fire.
1. Remove the fibre glass shell.
2. The flame effect spinner(s) leave the factory fitted on the lamp holder brackets. Carefully check that they are
located on the pin above the lamp and spinning freely.
3. Replace the shell.
4. Arrange the coals by first placing thinner pieces down behind the cast basket. Then build it up to cover the
shell 1 piece of coal deep all over. If extra coal is needed for any reason, it is perfectly acceptable to use
normal washed household coal.
5. Some models have slots cut into the fuel bed to cast a flicker up the back of the fire, experiment by
positioning the coals so as to allow light through some of the slots.
6. Position your fire taking note of the points listed above in Installation.
Maintenance.
Warning: –
Disconnect the fire from the power supply before undertaking any maintenance.
Replacing lamps. Access to the lamps can be gained through the open back of the fire, (not on model 223.) .
On the 223, remove all the coal and the fibre glass shell, change the lamps, then re-assemble.
Replace the lamp(s) with a 230 Volt 40w Edison screw candle bulb.
These bulbs are available from most electrical stores or supermarkets.
Please ensure the product has been disconnected from the mains and the bulb has cooled down.
To remove the bulb move the bracket to allow the red glass filter to be removed. The bulb can now
removed and replaced ensuring that it is the same type. Having done this, replace the red glass filter and
Move the bracket back into position to secure it.
.
Cleaning - brass. All brass has been lacquered to prevent it from tarnishing, it will only need dusting with a clean
cloth. Do not use any polishes or abrasives as this will destroy the protective surface. If you use a hearth cleaner or
wash your hearth, remove the fire prior to cleaning and replace when completely dry.
Cleaning – air intake grille and fan. The fan tends to attract atmospheric dust and fluff which over time may
restrict the air supply and cause the heater to cut out with a small blue flash from the element. This is a thermal cut
out to prevent the element from over-heating. If this occurs brush the air intake grille (positioned on the back of the
fan heater box.) After a longer period of time the blades of the fan may also need to be carefully brushed, this
should be carried out by a qualified person.
