TRUST 56K PCI MODEM

1. Introduction
This instruction manual is intended for the 'TRUST 56K PCI Modem’. This high-
speed, 56K PCI modem gives you a fast connection for Internet and e-mail use.
With the SuperVoice software, the Trust 56K PCI Modem is also ideal to use as a
handsfree telephone or a fax machine.
1.1 V92 standard
V92 is the future global standard devised by the ITU (International Telecom Union)
for communication between analogue modems. This improved standard is the
successor to the current V90 standard.
V92 is fully compatible with V90 and both standards have a download bandwidth of
56kbits/s. V92, however, has the following benefits:
• Improved data compression standard: V44 (V90 uses V42bis). This allows
for better data compression during data transfer, resulting in a higher
download speed. The increase in speed strongly depends of the nature of
the data being transferred: when downloading data that cannot be
compressed very easily, such as pictures in jpg format, the speed will equal
the speed achieved with V90.
• Increased upload speed (the maximum data transfer speed from your PC to
the Internet) to 48 kbit/s. V90 is limited to 33k6 bit/s.
• Faster 'connect time'. This is the time it takes to establish a full connection
with your ISP (Internet Service Provider). The technical name for this is V92
QuickConnect. This standard produces connect times of between 5 and 10
seconds.
• The 'modem standby' property. This property allows data communication to
be temporarily interrupted to accept incoming calls and to restart it after the
call has been ended.
At the time this manual was written, the V92 standard had not yet been issued. It is
expected to be ready in late October 2001, however, there may be some delay. As
soon as V92 becomes available, a firmware/driver update for the Trust 56K PCI
Modem will be placed on the Trust Internet site.
If you register your modem via www.trust.com/11709, you will be automatically
informed when the V92 firmware/driver is available.
Note: When the V92 standard is issued, it will probably take a few
months before your local ISP (Internet Service Provider) will
support the new standard. For further information, contact your
ISP.

2 Safety
Carefully read the following instructions before use:
2.1 General information
1. Computer components may contain static electricity. You may receive an
electric shock if you touch the computer casing.
2. Turn the computer off and remove the plug from the plug socket before
opening the computer.
3. Make sure that the components you wish to add to your computer are
compatible with your system.
2.2 Modems
1. The modem is intended for connecting to a standard analogue telephone
line. Do not connect it to digital telephone systems, such as ISDN or ADSL.
This may cause damage and is dangerous.
2. During a thunderstorm, it is recommended to remove the telephone cable
from the telephone socket to prevent damage resulting from a lightning
strike.
3 Installation
3.1 Installing the hardware
Follow the steps below to install the Trust 56K PCI Modem:
1. Turn the computer off.
2. Remove the plug from the plug socket.
3. Remove the cover from the computer casing.
4. If fitted, remove the metal cover plate on the rear of a free PCI slot (white).
5. Insert the Trust 56K PCI Modem into the free PCI slot and screw it firmly
into place.
6. Place the cover back onto the computer.
7. Insert the plug into the plug socket.
8. Connect the telephone cable provided to the ‘LINE’ connection on the rear

2. Windows will detect new hardware and ask for the location of the driver.
3. Insert the CD-ROM containing the driver and the applications into your CD-
ROM drive.
Note: The Trust Software Installer may start automatically when the
CD-ROM is inserted into your CD-ROM drive. You do not need
to use this and may close it.
4. Select the option to have Windows search in a specific location. Give one of
the paths below as the location:
- [D:\Win95] for installation in Windows 95
- [D:\Win98] for installation in Windows 98
- [D:\WinMe] for installation in Windows ME
- [D:\Win2000] for installation in Windows 2000
- [D:\WinXP] for installation in Windows XP
Note: The letter 'D' is used in the example above to indicate your CD-
ROM drive. Check which letter is used to indicate your CD-ROM
drive.
5. The driver will be found. Follow the instructions to install the program. Two
components will be installed:
- Trust 56K PCI Modem
- Wave Device for the Trust 56K PCI Modem (only in Windows 95, Windows
98 and Windows ME)
Note: During installation in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, you may
receive a message saying that the driver has not been signed.
This does not cause a problem for the functionality and you can
continue with the installation.
Note: If you register your 56K PCI modem via www.trust.com/11709,
you will be automatically informed when a signed driver is
available.
6. A modem Properties window will appear after the driver has been installed.
Select the ‘International Settings’ tab (see figure 1).
7. Select your country from the list and click on ‘Apply’ (see figure 1).
8. Click on ‘OK’ to close the window. You can display this window again at any
time via ‘Start – Settings – Control Panel’ and then double clicking on the
‘HaM Configuration’ icon.
9. Restart your system after the driver has been installed.
3.3 Installation in Windows NT4
The driver must be installed from the CD-ROM before the modem can be used.
1. Start Windows NT.
2. Log in as ‘Administrator’.
3. The ‘Trust Software Installer’ will start automatically. If it does not start
automatically, go to ‘Start – Run’ and type [D:\Setup.exe] in the command
line. Next, click on ‘OK’ (see figure 2).
4. Click on the ‘Windows NT4 Driver’ button to start the installation of the
driver (see figure 2).
5. Make sure the option to manually search for the driver is not selected and
click on ‘Next’. Windows NT4 will now automatically search for the driver.
6. The Trust 56K PCI Modem will be found. Click on ‘Next’.
