INDOOR COMPOSTER
How to use the Indoor Composter Kit
The Indoor Composter System
You can transform most food waste (including cooked food, meat, ī…“sh and cheese) into super healthy nutrient rich
compost with the help of this small and compact system in your kitchen. No bad smells or ī…¬ies! Once treated in the
Indoor Composter, this material can safely be dug into your garden or placed in your compost bin.
What is the Indoor Composī†Ŗng System?
It is one of the most eī…ecī†·ve methods of recycling kitchen organic waste. It is carried out in an airī†·ght container
using Bokashi as a compost acī†·vator.
Bokashi is a Japanese term meaning ā€œFermented Organic Maī‡erā€. It is material that has been fermented with
friendly bacteria. Bokashi can also be used as an eco-friendly household cleaner and deodorizer.
Bokashi aids the fermentaī†·on of organic maī‡er in your Indoor Composter. The fermentaī†·on process does not
produce adverse smells so you can keep the composter under the sink or anywhere in the home.
Items that CAN and CANNOT be put into the Indoor Composter
YES
Food Scraps & Leī…£overs

NO
Boī†“les/Cans (plasī†·c, glass, aluminium etc)
Packaging (metal, foil, staples, plasī†·cs etc)
Kit includes:
1. 1 x Indoor Composter with lid (with silicon seal) and strainer
2. 1 x tap with black washer to drain liquid ferī†·liser
3. 1 x compactor for removing air pockets and condensing contents
4. 1 x 500ml spray boī‡le of liquid Bokashi
Seī†¶ng up your Indoor Composter
1. Insert the tap into the threaded hole ensuring that the washer is ī…“ī‡ed. The thick washer will allow for a
good seal without being overly ī†·ght. Make sure not to overī†·ghten and squash the washer.
2. Fill the container with some water to check that there is no leaks coming from the seal of the tap. Then
empty the water.
3. Make sure the strainer is already ī…“rmly in posiī†·on at the boī‡om of the bucket and that the green seal is
ī…“rmly inserted at the boī‡om of the lid.

Using your Indoor Composter
1. You can start adding your cooked and uncooked food scraps into your composter right away.
2. When adding food waste give the contents 6-10 sprays of the liquid Bokashi. If you have added
a large amount of waste in one day then add more Bokashi. If you ī…“nd your system begins to
smell over ī†¶me, then you should be spraying more Bokashi and make sure to drain the liquid
from the tap.
3. Each ī†¶me you add waste you will need to condense the contents down using the compactor
provided. This will serve to extract the air and liquid from the organic maī‡€er.
4. It is always important to keep the lid shut when not being ī…“lled. This is an anaerobic composī†¶ng
system so the less air the beī‡€er. Make sure to close the clips as this will prevent the lid from
rising.
5. It can take upto a week for the liquid to build up inside. As the system works best with liī‡€le or
no liquid building up in the reservoir, it is important to check the reservoir levels daily. Donā€™t
worry if no liquid comes out as this will vary from ī†¶me to ī†¶me. Also please note as the bucket
is airī†¶ght, the liquid may only drain out the tap if the lid is open to allow air to entre.
The extracted liquid contains nutrients from the food organics and is therefore alive with beneī…“cial
microbes that can aid in the growth and development of your plants and shrubs.
For garden and house plants dilute 5-25ml in 5 litres of water and apply directly to the soil.
For trees and shrubs you can dilute as much as 50ml in 5 litres of water and apply directly to the soil.
Never apply directly to foliage.
Another opī†¶on is to pour the concentrated liquid directly into your kitchen and bathroom sinks, toilets or sepī†¶c
systems. The liquid will help to control odours and prevent algae build-up. The liquid feed should be used within a
day or two aī…±er draining from the composter.
6. When the composter is full, store away from direct sunlight. If you have a second composter you can start
adding waste to this.
Ideally the waste should stay in the composter for 2-3 weeks, with the liquid being drained
every few days.
7. When you are ready to dispose of the contents, dig a small hole or trench in your garden
bed (approximately 10-15cm deep), spread the contents 2-3cm thick and cover with soil.
The material will conī†¶nue breaking down (enriching the soil as it does so).
As the material is quite acidic at ī…“rst, it is best not to bury close to plants or tree roots.
If you have and outdoor compost bin, you can also add the contents of the Indoor
Composter directly to your outdoor composter. You just need to make sure to mix the
contents in well.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Aī…±er emptying, rinse the composter with water (no detergents or soaps) and allow to dry thoroughly.
Once dry the unit is ready for use again.
