AXI 016 ‱ Setup Guide
This guide provides basic instructions for an experienced technician to install the AXI 016 Audio Expansion Interface. The AXI016
is a pure breakout device that provides 16 line-level outputs for EXP-enabled devices. The AXI016 is simple to use with no DSP
processing hardware controls. For additional information and specications, go to www.extron.com.
NOTES:
‱ EXP-enabled devices are devices that contain an Extron EXP port for routing 16 bidirectional channels of digital audio.
‱ In this guide, “EXP-enabled devices” and “EXP devices” are used interchangeably.
Disconnect Power and Mount the AXI 016
Disconnect power from the AXI 016 and power off all devices that will be connected to it. The AXI 016 is housed in a half-rack
width, 6-inch deep, 1U-high metal enclosure that can be rack mounted, set on a rack shelf, or placed on a table with the provided
rubber feet. Select a suitable mounting location, then choose an appropriate mounting option.

ATTENTION:
‱ Always use a power supply provided by or specified by Extron. Use of an unauthorized power supply voids all regulatory
compliance certification and may cause damage to the supply and the end product.

ATTENTION:
‱ If not provided with a power supply, this product is intended to be supplied by a UL Listed power source marked “Class
2” or “LPS” and rated output 12VDC, 0.7 A minimum, 48 or 56 VDC (PoE), minimum 0.35 A.
0,35Aminimum.
‱ Unless otherwise stated, the AC/DC adapters are not suitable for use in air handling spaces or in wall cavities. The
power supply is to be located within the same vicinity as the Extron AV processing equipment in an ordinary location,
Pollution Degree2, secured to the equipment rack within the dedicated closet, podium, or desk.
‱ The installation must always be in accordance with the applicable provisions of National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70,
article 725 and the Canadian Electrical Code part 1, section 16. The power supply shall not be permanently fixed to
building structure or similar structure.
B — Use 6-pole, 3.5 mm captive screw connectors to connect up to 16 balanced or Analog Audio Outputs
unbalanced line-level devices. Balanced or unbalanced mono devices can also be connected using 3-pole, 3.5 mm
captive screw connectors.

C — This RJ-45 EXP port connects the AXI 016 to the EXP port of a primary EXP device. EXP Input Port and LED
The Expansion output channels of the primary EXP device are sent to the AXI016 line outputs (see Connecting
a Primary Device to the EXP Input Port on the next page). The LED to the right of the port blinks to EXP INPUT
indicate a primary EXP device is connected.
NOTE: A primary EXP device is a device that has been set as a in DSP Configurator (see the Primary Unit
DMP 128 Plus User Guide for more information regarding primary and secondary EXP devices). DMP 128 Plus units are
set to primary by default.
D — This RJ-45 EXP port connects the Expansion output channels of a secondary EXP EXP Thru Port and LED
device to the AXI016. When a primary EXP device is connected to the port, the Expansion output EXP INPUT
channels of the secondary EXP device connected to the port are sent through the AXI016 to the Expansion EXP THRU
input channels of the primary device connected to the port (see EXP INPUT Connecting a Primary EXP Device and
Secondary EXP Device on page4). If no primary EXP device is connected to the port, the Expansion EXP INPUT
output channels of the secondary EXP device connected to the port are sent to the AXI016 line outputs EXP THRU
(see on page6). The LED to the right of the Connecting a Secondary EXP Device to the EXP Thru Port EXP
THRU port lights solid to indicate a secondary EXP device is connected.

Application and Signal Flow Diagrams
The following diagrams display the different signal ows when primary and secondary EXP-enabled devices are connected to the
AXI 016.
NOTE: Daisy-chaining two or more AXI 016 units together is not supported.
Connecting a Primary Device to the EXP Input Port

the port of the AXI016.EXP INPUT
‱ All 16 Expansion output channels of the primary device are routed to the line outputs of the AXI016 (see path A1 in figure 5).
‱ Expansion output channel 1 of the primary device is routed to the AXI 016 line output 1, and so on.
