Information about this measuring instrument
This multimeter has been constructed and tested in accordance with theîrequirements
of Measurement Category III (CAT III) up to 600 V nominal voltage and Pollution
Degreeî2.
Categorisation
Measuring instruments are classiďŹed into categories according to what kind of
electrical environment they can be used in and how safe/protective they are at
withstanding overvoltages.
The Measurement Category of theîinstrument will be marked on theîratingîplate.
The Measurement Category indicates how capable theîinstrument is of withstanding
overvoltages which could be dangerous for theîuser.
In brief, theîcategorisation can be described like this:
⢠In theîevent of aîsudden overvoltage on theîpower grid (aîtransient energy spike
from aîlightning strike for example) theîdanger is greatest at theîpoint where
theîpower supply service cable enters aîbuilding.
⢠Further in theîbuilding, theîresistance (impedance) in theîmains supply
cables increases and connected appliances and devices reduce and divide
theîovervoltage. Therefore, theîMeasurement Category (also called Overvoltage
Installation Category) of theîmeasuring instrument indicates which electrical
environment theîinstrument is designed to be usedîin.
The categories that measuring instruments are classiďŹed into are:
⢠CAT : For measuring electronics and products that have aîbuilt-in protection I
from overvoltage.
⢠CAT : For measuring single-phase equipment connected to aîhousehold mains II
supply, both through wall sockets and ďŹxed installation.
⢠CAT : For measuring electrical wiring installed in buildings. Examples are III
measurements on ďŹxed installation cables and hard-wired appliances, socket
outlets, circuit breakers and distribution boards. Three-phase distribution (all
supply cables and 3-phase equipment, machines and appliances).
⢠CAT : Three-phase at theîutility connection and any outdoor conductors.IV
This multimeter is rated as CAT III and is approved for measuring voltages up to
600îV on single-phase products. Thisîmultimeter must not be used for measuring
three-phase equipment, three-phase cables or distribution boards even if
theînominal voltage is not higher than 600îV.
