The AC plug on your new 20 Amp Furman product is a NEMA 5-20P. The blades are oriented
perpendicular to each other to disī†Ÿnguish the 20 Amp plug from the more familiar 15 Amp
plug, the NEMA 5-15P which has two parallel blades. All products that are rated for 20 Amps
must use the perpendicular blade plug to obtain a UL (Underwritersā€™ Laboratory) safety lisī†Ÿng.
We recognize that using an unfamiliar plug may be an inconvenience to our customers, but this
is a maī†©er of public safety.
So where do I plug in the NEMA 5-20P?
Devices with a NEMA 5-20P plug will require a 20 Amp or higher rated circuit. Please noī†Ÿce
NEMA 5-20R receptacles have one T-shaped contact that can accept either the horizontal
parallel blade or the verī†Ÿcal perpendicular blade. According to the Naī†Ÿonal Electrical Code, if
one wishes to uī†Ÿlize loads in excess of 15 Amps, the electrical wiring, circuit breakers, and receptacles must
be rated at least 20 Amps. Locaī†Ÿons without 20 Amp receptacles should be inspected and upgraded to the
proper NEMA speciī„®caī†Ÿon by a licensed professional. The NEMA 5-20P (Plug) is designed to be used with a
NEMA5-20R (Receptacle), preī†©y simple ā€“ right?
Is there any alternative?
Yes! You may adapt the NEMA 5-20P to a 15 Amp outlet with the intenī†Ÿon to draw no more than 12
Amperes conī†Ÿnuously. Furman has designed the ADP-1520B in compliance with UL speciī„®caī†Ÿons just for
this purpose. Please contact your Furman dealer to verify the ADP-1520B is right for your applicaī†Ÿon. In a
business locaī†Ÿon, a local ī„®re inspector may not allow the use of adaptors deemed noncompliant. The safety listed ADP-1520B would be a
worthy consideraī†Ÿon in such instances.
The ADP-1520B is UL and CSA compliant.
OK, suppose I use an improper adapter with a 15A outlet and then I draw 20
Amps anyway. What will happen?
Probably nothing serious, since most commercial and many residenī†Ÿal circuits are at least 20 Amps. However, some residences do
use 15 Amp circuits; if you aī†©empt to draw more than 12 Amps, the circuit breaker on the ADP-1520B will ā€œtripā€. In order to avoid this
inconvenience, check the electrical service panel, locate and conī„®rm the size of the breaker installed, if the 12A breaker trips reduce the
load to below 12 Amperes. Avoid repeated nuisance trips which can result in damaged equipment or in extreme cases ī„®re. Note nuisance
trips can be an indicaī†Ÿon of electrical faults in equipment or the electrical system, yet usually itā€™s due to high current draws

INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing a Furman P-8 PRO C Power Condiī†Ÿoner and Congratulaī†Ÿons on your choice. The P-8 PRO C fea-
tures Furmanā€™s venerable Series Mulī†Ÿ-Stage Protecī†Ÿon Plus (SMP+) circuit as well as our exclusive Linear Filtering Technol-
ogy (LiFT). Together, these technologies comprise what is, without quesī†Ÿon, the worlds most advanced and comprehensive
transient voltage surge suppressor / condiī†Ÿoner.
SMP+ (SERIES MULTI-STAgE PROTECTION PLUS)
Furmanā€™s SMP+ surge suppression virtually eliminates service calls. Tradiī†Ÿonal surge suppression circuits ā€œsacriī„®ceā€ them-
selves when exposed to mulī†Ÿple transient voltage spikes, requiring the dismantling of your system, and repair of your
surge suppressor. Not so with SMP+. With Furmanā€™s SMP+, damaging transient voltages are safely absorbed, clamped, and
dissipated. Unique to Furmanā€™s SMP+ is its clamping voltage level. While other designs oī„«er clamping voltages that are well
above 330 Vpk, Furmanā€™s SMP+ clamps at 188 Vpk, (133 VAC RMS). This level of protecī†Ÿon is only available with Furmanā€™s
SMP+ technology. Addiī†Ÿonally, Furmanā€™s trusted over-voltage circuitry protects against frequent and accidental connecī†Ÿons
to 208 or 240 VAC, by shuī†«ng oī„« the incoming power unī†Ÿl the over voltage condiī†Ÿon is corrected.
LIFT (LINEAR FILTERINg TEChNOLOgy)
Unfortunately, tradiī†Ÿonal AC ī„®lters/condiī†Ÿoners have been designed for unrealisī†Ÿc laboratory condiī†Ÿons. Prior technol-
ogies, whether mulī†Ÿple pole ī„®lter or convenī†Ÿonal series mode, could actually harm audio and video performance more
than they help, due to the resonant peaking of their anī†Ÿquated, non-linear designs. Under certain condiī†Ÿons, these designs
can actually add more than 10 dB of noise to the incoming AC line! Worse sī†Ÿll, lost digital data, the need to re-boot digital
pre-sets, or destroyed digital converters are frequently caused by excessive voltage spikes and AC noise contaminaī†Ÿng the
equipment ground. Furmanā€™s SMP+ with LiFT takes another approach, ensuring opī†Ÿmal performance through linear ī„®ltering
and no leakage to ground.
