However, continued use of irregular shaped CDs can damage the unit.

Handling precautions
β₯If you are taking the CD from a cold to
a warm environment, moisture may
form on the CD. Wipe this off with a
soft, dry, lint-free cloth before using the
CD.
β₯Do not write on the label side with a
ball-point pen or other writing instru-
ment.
β₯Do not use record cleaning sprays,
benzine, thinner, static electricity pre-
vention liquids or any other solvent.
β₯Do not attach labels or stickers to CDs.
(Do not use CDs with exposed adhe-
sive from tape or left over peeled off
stickers.)
β₯Do not use scratch-proof protectors
etc.
Storage precautions
Be sure to store CDs in their cases to
protect them from dust, scratches, and
warping.
Do not place or store CDs in the fol-
lowing places
β₯Locations exposed to direct sunlight
β₯Humid or dusty locations
β₯Locations directly exposed to a heat
vent or heating appliance
β₯In the glove compartment or on the
rear deck of an automobile
Safety
1. Power sourceβConnect the unit to a power source
of the type described in these instructions or as
marked on the unit.
2. PolarizationβThe unit is equipped with a polarized
power plug where one blade is wider than the other.
This safety feature ensures that the plug ts into yourο¬
household AC outlet only one way. If the plug does-
n tβt ο¬t one way, try reversing it. If the plug still doesnβ
ο¬t, contact an electrician to replace the obsolete out-
let. Do not attempt to defeat the safety purpose of
the plug.
3. Power cord protectionβRoute the AC power sup-
ply cord so that it will not be walked on or pinched by
items placed on or against it. Never take hold of the
plug or cord with wet hands. Always grasp the plug
body rmly when connecting and disconnecting it.ο¬
4. OverloadingβWhen connecting the AC power sup-
ply cord, be careful not to overload the household
AC outlet, extension cord, or outlet from any other
device as this can result in re or electric shock.ο¬
5. Nonuse periodsβTurn the unit off when it is not in
use. Unplug the unit from the household AC outlet if
it is not to be used for a long time. Unplug the unit
during lightning storms. Leaving the unit connected
to a household AC outlet for extended periods can
cause battery uid leakage.ο¬
6. Attachments and accessoriesβUse only the at-
tachments and accessories recommended in these
operating instructions.
Installation
Placement
1. Foreign materialβEnsure objects and liquids do
not get into the unit. Avoid exposing the unit to ex-
cessive smoke, dust, mechanical vibration, and
shock.
2. MagnetismβSituate the unit away from equipment
and devices that generate strong magnetic elds.ο¬
3. StackingβDo not place anything on top of this unit.
4. Wall and ceiling mountingβDo not mount the unit
on walls or ceilings unless speci ed in the instruc-ο¬
tions.
Environment
1. Water and moistureβDo not use the unit near
water, such as near a bathtub or swimming pool.
Avoid damp basements.
2. HeatβSituate the unit away from heat sources, such
as radiators. Do not leave it in an automobile ex-
posed to direct sunlight with the doors and windows
closed as this may deform the cabinet.
2. Do not situate where temperatures fall below 5 oC
(41 C (95 oF) or rise above 35 o oF).

Unplug the unit from the household AC outlet before
cleaning.
Clean with a damp cloth.
Do not use abrasive pads, scouring powders, or sol-
vents.
Service
1. Damage requiring serviceβThe unit should be
serviced by quali ed service personnel if:ο¬
1. (a) The AC power supply cord or AC adaptor has
been damaged; or
1. (b) Objects or liquids have gotten into the unit; or
1. (c) The unit has been exposed to rain; or
1. (d) The unit does not operate normally or exhibits a
marked change in performance; or
1. (e) The unit has been dropped or the cabinet dam-
aged.
2. ServicingβDo not attempt to service the unit be-
yond that described in these operating instructions.
Refer all other servicing to authorized servicing per-
sonnel.
3. Replacement partsβWhen parts need replacing
ensure the servicer uses parts speci ed by the man-ο¬
ufacturer or parts that have the same characteristics
as the original parts. Unauthorized substitutes may
result in re, electric shock, or other hazards.ο¬
4. Safety checkβAfter repairs or service, ask the ser-
vicer to perform safety checks to conο¬rm that the unit
is in proper working condition.

Power Supply Preparations
Refer to the speci cations (page 8) for information on operating times when using rechargeable batteries or dry cell batteries.ο¬
Using the AC adaptor
(not included)
Use only the recommended AC adaptor. Using other AC
adaptors can damage the unit.
Connect the AC adaptor.
2 Connect the AC adaptor.
(Refer to Using the AC adaptor for connectionβ β
instructions.) Recharging starts and the β
β
charging indicator ashes on the display. Whenο¬
the rechargeable batteries fully recharge the
charging indicator disappears.
3When charging is complete, unplug
the AC adaptor from the household
AC outlet and DC IN jack.
Note!
β₯Rechargeable batteries have a service life of approxi-
mately 300 charge-discharge cycles. The batteries
have reached the end of their operational life if they
last for a noticeably shorter time after recharging, or if
they cannot be recharged at all. Replace the batteries.
β₯Recharging may only be performed when the unit is
off.
β₯The AC adaptor and rechargeable batteries may be-
come warm while recharging is in progress. This is not
a malfunction.
β₯Leaving the AC adaptor connected can cause the bat-
teries to go at. After recharging the batteries and dis-ο¬
connecting the AC adaptor from the household AC
outlet, ensure you disconnect the AC adaptor from the
unit s [DC IN 4.5 V βK] terminal.
Battery indicator
This indicator ashes when the batteries are almost outο¬
of power. Power is cut off completely a short while later.
Rechargeable batteries: Recharge batteries.
Dry cell batteries: Replace batteries with new ones.
Note!
β₯The length of time the unit will continue to operate be-
tween when the battery indicator starts ο¬ashing and
when the power is cut off differs depending on the
type of batteries used.
β₯The battery indicator may not ο¬ash if rechargeable
batteries other than those designated by Panasonic
are used.
Using the car adaptor
SL-MP36C includes a car adaptor. Refer to the sepa-
rate Installation Instructionsβ β.
For SL-MP35, obtain the car adaptor (SH-CDC9) avail-
able as an optional accessory.
The car adaptor can be used to recharge the unit s bat-β
teries while in the car.
Use only the recommended car adaptor. Use of other
car adaptors can damage the unit.
Removing batteries
Push up on the battery
in the direction indicat-
ed by the arrow. Then
lift it out.
If the battery lid
comes loose
Slide the lid back into
place horizontally.
If the unit malfunctions or freezes during
use, disconnect the power source (the AC
adaptor or batteries).
Re-connect the power source and contin-
ue operation.

Conserving power
To save power when the unit is not to be used for a long
time, unplug the AC adaptor from the household AC outlet.
Note!
Turn the unit off before connecting or disconnecting the
AC adaptor.

This function causes the unit to ignore
short, accidental button presses. (The
disc lid can still be opened and closed.)
The HOLD function prevents the
following:
β₯The unit is powered on accidentally
when not in use, causing the batteries
to run down.
β₯A button is accidentally pressed during
play, interrupting the operation.
To use the HOLD function
Set [HOLD] to the HOLD position.
β β indication
When the unit is in HOLD mode,
pressing any button causes the indica-
tion, to appear on the display.β β
When the unit is off
The β β indication appears only
when [ ] is pressed.1 ;/

β₯Never mix dry cell and rechargeable batteries.
β₯Turn the unit off before replacing the recharge-
able batteries.
Using rechargeable batteries
(not included)
Obtain the optional rechargeable batteries.
Make sure to recharge the batteries before using them.
The unit cannot be used to charge rechargeable batter-
ies other than those specially designed for it.

Recharging procedure
1 Insert the special rechargeable bat-
teries into the unit. Using dry cell batteries
(not included)
After disconnecting the AC adaptor, insert two βLR6,
AA, UM-3 alkaline batteries.β
The procedure for inserting and removing dry cell
batteries is identical to that for rechargeable bat-
teries.
CAUTION:
Use only car adaptor, Model: SH-CDC9 manufac-
tured by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.
Before operating the buttons
Be sure to move [HOLD] to release
the unit from the HOLD mode.

is not properly secured.

lid is opened. (However, the indication does not appear
when the unit is off.)
Removing discs
1 Press [β«] to stop play and disc rotation.
2 Slide [OPEN 1] to open the lid.
3Press [PUSH] to release the disc.
Do not stop the disc by hand or try to remove it before it
stops rotating. This can damage CDs.
Note!
Never insert foreign objects into the unit.
Auto-off function
If you leave the unit in stop mode for about 10 minutes
(30 seconds if disc is not loaded), it turns off to save the
batteries.

β₯You cannot skip to tracks that have been played
in random or random repeat play (page 4).

This unit can play CD-DA format audio CD-R and

of recording. It may not be able to play some CD-R
or CD-RW due to the condition of the recording.

Finalizing is a process that enables CD-R/CD-RW
players to play audio CD-R and CD-RW.

In step 5: The volume range is 0-25. Press and hold to change the volume successively. The volume changes when
pressed while the level is displayed. If any other display is shown, it changes to show the current level.

β₯Play stops automatically when all the tracks have been played.
