3) PERSONAL SAFETY
a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a
power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of
drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power toolsmay
result in serious personal injury.
b) Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Safety equipment such as
dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate
conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before plugging
in. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in power tools that have
the switch on invites accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or
a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better
control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing
and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught
in moving parts. Air vents often cover moving parts and should also be avoided.
g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities,
ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of these devices can reduce dust-
related hazards.
4) POWER TOOL USE AND CARE
a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The
correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool
that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power
tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.
Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons
unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power
tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage
of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tools operation. If
damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by
poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting
edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in accordance with these
instructions and in the manner intended for the particular type of power tool, taking
into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power
tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
5) SERVICE
a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical
replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
Additional Specific Safety Instructions For Sanders
• Hold power tools by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation
where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Contact with a “live”
wire will make exposed metal parts of the tool “live” and shock the operator.
• Do not sand metal of any kind with your sander. Sparks may be generated by sanding
screws, nails or other metals which may ignite dust particles.
• Do not wet sand with this sander. Liquids may enter the motor housing and cause electric
shock.
• Empty dust bag frequently. Especially when sanding resin coated surfaces such as
polyurethane, varnish, shellac, etc. The accumulation of fine sanding dust particles may
self ignite and cause fire.
• Do not operate this tool for long periods of time. Vibration caused by the operating action
of this tool may cause permanent injury to fingers, hands, and arms. Use gloves to provide
extra cushion, take frequent rest periods, and limit daily time of use.
• Sanding of lead-based paint, chemically pressure treated lumber or other materials
that may contain carcinogens is not recommended. Sanding of these materials should
only be performed by a professional.
• Clean out your tool often, especially after heavy use. Dust and grit containing metal par-
ticles often accumulate on interior surfaces and could create a risk of serious injury, electric
shock or electrocution. ALWAYS disconnect the sander from the power source before clean-
ing. ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES that conform to ANSI Z87.1.
• ALWAYS disconnect tool from the power source before changing abrasive belts,
sheets or discs. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool
accidentally.
• Replace worn CFS disc when it causes high tool rpm. High tool rpm caused by a worn
out CFS disc may result in separation of sanding pad from the sander, possibly causing per-
sonal injury. for instructions on replacing the CFS disc, see the section of this manual titled
“Tool Care.”

approved safety equipment, such as those dust masks that are specially designed to filter out
microscopic particles.

soap and water. Allowing dust to get into your mouth, eyes, or lay on the skin may promote
absorption of harmful chemicals.

General Safety Rules
WARNING! Read all instructions. Failure to follow all instructions listed below
may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. The term “power tool” in all
of the warnings listed below refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or
battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
1) WORK AREA SAFETY
a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of
flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust
or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can
cause you to lose control.
2) ELECTRICAL SAFETY
a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not
use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and
matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators,
ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is
earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will
increase the risk of electric shock
d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the
power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged
or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. Replace or repair damaged cords.
Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. Use only 3-wire extension cords that
have 3-prong grounding-type plugs and 3-pole receptacles that accept the tool’s plug.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor
use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock. When using
an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current your product will
draw. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and
overheating. The following table shows the correct size to use depending on cord length
and nameplate ampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the
gauge number, the heavier the cord.

Precautions To Take When Sanding Paint
1. Sanding of lead based paint is NOT RECOMMENDED due to the difficulty of controlling
the contaminated dust. The greatest danger of lead poisoning is to children and pregnant
women.
2. Since it is difficult to identify whether or not a paint contains lead without a chemical
analysis, we recommend the following precautions when sanding any paint:
PERSONAL SAFETY
1. No children or pregnant women should enter the work area where the paint sanding
is being done until all clean up is completed.
2. A dust mask or respirator should be worn by all persons entering the work area. The
filter should be replaced daily or whenever the wearer has difficulty breathing. See
your local hardware store for the proper NIOSH-approved dust mask.
3. NO EATING, DRINKING or SMOKING should be done in the work area to prevent
ingesting contaminated paint particles. Workers should wash and clean up BEFORE
eating, drinking or smoking. Articles of food, drink, or smoking should not be left in the
work area where dust would settle on them.
ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY
1. Paint should be removed in such a manner as to minimize the amount of dust gener-
ated.
2. Areas where paint removal is occurring should be sealed with plastic sheeting of
4 mils thickness.
3. Sanding should be done in a manner to reduce tracking of paint dust outside the work
area.
CLEANING AND DISPOSAL
1. All surfaces in the work area should be vacuumed and thoroughly cleaned daily for
the duration of the sanding project. Vacuum filter bags should be changed frequent-
ly.
2. Plastic drop cloths should be gathered up and disposed of along with any dust chips
or other removal debris. They should be placed in sealed refuse receptacles and
disposed of through regular trash pick-up procedures. During clean up, children and
pregnant women should be kept away from the immediate work area.
3. All toys, washable furniture and utensils used by children should be washed thoroughly
before being used again.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
Motor
Your D WALT tool is powered by a DE EWALT built motor. Be sure your power supply agrees with
the nameplate marking. (Volts, 120 AC only). Voltage decrease of more than 10% will cause
loss of power and overheating. All DEWALT tools are factory tested; if this tool does not operate,
check the power supply.
Intended Use
The DW421 heavy-duty random orbit palm sander has been designed for professional
sanding at various work sites (i.e., construction sites). use under humid conditions DO NOT
or in presence of flammable liquids or gases.
This random orbit palm sander is a professional power tool. DO NOT let children come into
contact with the tool. Supervision is required when inexperienced operators use this tool.
Attaching Sanding Discs
Your sander is designed to use 5" (127 mm) sanding discs. Discs have an 8 hole dust
extraction pattern and hook and loop attachment. To attach paper to the sanding pad:

1. Turn off and unplug the tool.
2. Turn the sander over so that the sanding pad is facing upward.
3. Clean dust from the vinyl pad face.
4. Hold the pad with one hand to keep it from rotating.
5. With the other hand, align the holes if they are present, and place the disc directly on top
of the pad. (FIG. 1).
NOTE: Do not use sanding screen (e.g. screen used for sanding drywall) directly on the
hook and loop pad. The screen will not hold and will damage the hooks on the pad. The
hooks on the pad will wear very rapidly if left in contact with the work surface while the tool
is operating.
Switch (Fig. 2)
To turn the unit on, depress the side of the dust protected switch that corresponds to
the symbol “I”. To turn the tool off, depress the side of the switch that corresponds to the
symbol “O”.
Dust Extraction (Fig. 3, 4)
Your sander comes equipped with a cloth bag to collect the dust generated during sand-
ing. It was designed to be very durable and efficient yet easy to empty. To empty the dust
collection bag:
1. Turn off and unplug tool.
2. While holding the canister, twist to unlock and remove the adapter. (Fig. 3)
3. Gently empty the bag and shake out the adapter. (Fig. 4)
You may notice that all the dust will not come free from the bag. This will not affect sanding
performance but will reduce the sander’s dust collection efficiency. To restore your sander’s
dust collection efficiency, depress the spring inside the dust bag when you are emptying it
and tap it on the side of the trash can or dust receptacle.
CAUTION: Never operate this tool unless the dust collector is in place. Sanding dust
exhaust may create a breathing hazard.
OPERATION
WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, turn tool off and
disconnect tool from power source before making any adjustments or removing/
installing attachments or accessories.
Usage
To operate your sander, grasp it as shown in figures 5A or 5B and turn it on. Move the unit
in long, sweeping strokes along the surface being sanded, letting the sander do the work.
Pushing down on the tool while sanding actually slows the removal rate and produces an
inferior quality surface. Be sure to check your work often, this sander is capable of removing
material rapidly, especially with coarse paper.
The random orbital action of your sander allows you to sand with the grain or at any angle
across it for most sanding jobs. To produce the best finish possible, start with coarse grit
sandpaper and change gradually to finer and finer paper. Vacuum and wipe surface with a
tack cloth between grit steps.Your sander is designed to sand into small or confined areas.
Its small size and light weight make it ideal for overhead work.
If your sander has the dust collection feature, the rate at which the dust collection bag fills
up will vary with the type of material being sanded and the coarseness of the sandpaper.
For best results, empty the bag frequently. When sanding painted surfaces, (see the follow-
ing for additional precautions when sanding paint) you may find that the sandpaper loads
up and clogs with paint. A heat gun will work much better to remove paint before sanding.

MAINTENANCE
WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, turn tool off and
disconnect tool from power source before making any adjustments or removing/
installing attachments or accessories.
Cleaning
WARNING: Never use solvents or other harsh chemicals for cleaning the non-metallic
parts of the tool. These chemicals may weaken the plastic materials used in these parts.
Use a cloth dampened only with water and mild soap. Never let any liquid get inside the
tool; never immerse any part of the tool into a liquid.

Tool Care
1. Keep your sander as clean as possible by wiping with a clean cloth and blowing air
through it after every 5 hours of use.
2. As part of CFS (Controlled Finishing System), your sander is equipped with a
replaceable disc which is located between the pad and the shroud. It is designed to
increase the dust collection efficiency and control the pad speed while the unit is off the
work. The disc is designed to be a consumable part and will occasionally need to be
replaced. Replacement is necessary when the pad speed increases very dramatically
when the unit is lifted from the work surface. To replace your CFS disc:
a. Turn off and unplug tool.
b. Remove 3 screws from the bottom of the pad.
c. Remove the pad.
d. Snap out worn disc.
e. Snap in new disc, aligning notch in disc with cut out in shroud shown in figure 7.
f. Press in new disc around the edges using both hands to ensure that the disc is
inserted snugly into the shroud as shown in figure 8.
g. Replace the pad and the 3 screws.
3. Avoid overloading your sander. Overloading will result in a considerable reduction in
speed and finish quality of your work. The unit may also become hot. In this event, run
sander at a no load condition for a minute or two.
4. If you wrap the cord around the tool when you store it, leave a generous loop of cord
such that the strain relief does not bend. This helps prevent premature cord failure.
Brush Replacement
WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, turn tool off and
disconnect tool from power source before making any adjustments or removing/
installing attachments or accessories.
Follow these directions to replace the tool’s brushes:
1. Remove the three screws located in the top cap, as shown in figure 9.
2. Lift off the top cap. Observe the brush holders and wires leading from the brushes to the
motor field, as shown in figure 10.
3. Pull the wires from the motor field and then lift and hold out of the way of one of the
brush springs.
4. Remove the old brush from the brush holder and discard the brush/wire assembly. Still
holding the brush spring out of the way, insert the new brush and release the spring
against the back of the brush. Then plug the wire into the motor field. Repeat the pro-
cedure for the second brush.
5. Replace the top cap and tighten the three screws that hold it in place. Always replace
both brushes.
Lubrication
Self lubricating bearings are used in the tool and periodic relubrication is not required.
However,
it is recommended that, once a year, you take or send the tool to a service center for
a thorough cleaning and inspection.
Accessories
WARNING: Since accessories, other than those offered by D WALT, have not been tested E
with this product, use of such accessories with this tool could be hazardous. To reduce the risk
of injury, only DEWALT, recommended accessories should be used with this product.

3) SÉCURITÉ PERSONNELLE

des accidents sont causés par des outils mal entretenus.
f) Maintenir tout outil de coupe bien aiguisé et propre. Les outils de coupe bien entrete-
nus et affûtés sont moins susceptibles de se coincer et sont plus faciles à contrôler.
g) Utiliser un outil électrique, ses accessoires, mèches, etc., conformément aux
présentes directives et suivant la manière prévue pour ce type particulier d’outil
Ă©lectrique, en tenant compte des conditions de travail et du travail Ă effectuer.
L’utilisation d’un outil électrique pour toute opération autre que celle pour laquelle il a été
conçu est dangereuse.
5) RÉPARATION
a) Faire entretenir les outils électriques par un réparateur qualifié en n’utilisant que
des pièces de rechange identiques. Cela permettra d’assurer l’intégrité de l’outil élec-
trique et la sécurité de l’utilisateur.

• Tenir l’outil par sa surface de prise isolée dans une situation où l’outil de coupe peut
entrer en contact avec un câblage caché ou avec son propre cordon d’alimentation.
Tout contact avec un fil « sous tension » mettra « sous tension » les pièces métalliques
exposées de l’outil et provoquera un choc électrique chez l’opérateur de l’outil.
• Ne pas poncer de surfaces métalliques de tout type avec la ponceuse. Le ponçage de
vis, clous ou autres pièces métalliques produit des étincelles qui pourraient enflammer des
particules de poussière.
• Ne pas poncer à l’eau avec la présente ponceuse. Du liquide risque de pénétrer le boîtier
du moteur et ainsi provoquer un choc Ă©lectrique.
• Vider fréquemment le sac à poussière. Surtout lors du ponçage de surfaces enduites
de résine comme du polyuréthane, du vernis, du vernis à la gomme-laque, etc.
L’accumulation de particules fines de poussières de ponçage peut faire embraser les parti-
cules et causer un incendie.
• Ne pas faire fonctionner cet outil durant de longues périodes. Les vibrations causées
par le fonctionnement de cet outil peuvent provoquer des blessures permanentes aux doigts,
aux mains et aux bras. Utiliser des gants pour amortir davantage les vibrations, prendre de
fréquentes périodes de repos et limiter la durée quotidienne d’utilisation.
• Le ponçage de peinture à base de plomb, de bois traité chimiquement (sous pression)
ou tout autre matériau contenant des éléments cancérogènes n’est pas recommandé.
Le ponçage de ces matériaux ne doit être réalisé que par un professionnel.
• Nettoyer l’outil régulièrement, particulièrement après une utilisation intensive. La
poussière et les saletés contenant des particules métalliques s’accumulent souvent sur les
surfaces internes de l’outil et pourraient constituer un risque de blessure grave, de choc
électrique ou d’électrocution. TOUJOURS débrancher la ponceuse avant de procéder au
nettoyage. TOUJOURS PORTER DES LUNETTES DE SÉCURITÉ en conformité avec la
norme ANSI Z87.1.
• TOUJOURS débrancher l’outil avant de changer de bandes ou de feuilles abrasives.
Ces mesures préventives réduisent les risques de démarrage accidentel de l’outil élec-
trique.
• Remplacer un disque de système de finition contrôlé usé lorsqu’il provoque une aug-
mentation trop élevée du régime de l’outil. Un régime trop élevé attribuable à un disque
usé peut provoquer la séparation du patin de la ponceuse et causer des blessures. Pour
obtenir des directives relatives au remplacement d’un disque de système de finition contrôlé,
consulter la section du présent manuel intitulée « Entretien de l’outil ».
AVERTISSEMENT : TOUJOURS porter des lunettes de sécurité. Les lunettes de vue ne
constituent PAS des lunettes de sécurité. Utiliser également un masque facial ou anti-
poussière si l’opération de découpe génère de la poussière. TOUJOURS PORTER UN
ÉQUIPEMENT DE PROTECTION HOMOLOGUÉ :
• protection oculaire conforme à la norme ANSI Z87.1 (CAN/CSA Z94.3),
• protection auditive conforme à la norme ANSI S12.6 (S3.19) et
• protection des voies respiratoires conformes aux normes NIOSH/OSHA/MSHA.
AVERTISSEMENT : TOUJOURS porter une protection auditive appropriée conformé-
ment à la norme ANSI S12.6 (S3.19) lors de l’utilisation du produit. Dans certaines condi-
tions et selon la durée d’utilisation, le bruit émis par ce produit peut contribuer à une perte
auditive.
AVERTISSEMENT : toujours utiliser une protection oculaire. Tous les utilisateurs et per-
sonnes à proximité doivent porter une protection oculaire conforme à la norme ANSI Z87.1.

Règles générales de sécurité
AVERTISSEMENT : Lire toutes ces directives. Tout manquement aux directives

Ă votre outil Ă©lectrique Ă alimentation sur secteur (avec fil) ou par piles (sans fil).
CONSERVER CES DIRECTIVES
1) SÉCURITÉ - AIRE DE TRAVAIL
a) Maintenir l’aire de travail propre et bien éclairée. Les lieux encombrés ou sombres sont
propices aux accidents.
b) Ne pas faire fonctionner un outil électrique dans une atmosphère explosive, en
présence par exemple de poussières, gaz ou liquides inflammables. Les outils élec-
triques peuvent engendrer des Ă©tincelles qui pourraient enflammer toute Ă©manation ou
poussière ambiante.
c) Tenir les enfants, ou toute autre personne, éloignés pendant l’utilisation d’un outil
électrique. Toute distraction pourrait vous faire perdre la maîtrise de ce dernier.
2) SÉCURITÉ – ÉLECTRICITÉ
a) La fiche électrique de l’outil doit correspondre à la prise murale. Ne jamais
modifier la fiche en aucune façon. Ne jamais utiliser de fiche d’adaptation avec un
outil électrique mis à la terre. L’utilisation de fiches d’origine et de prises appropriées
réduira les risques de choc électrique.
b) Éviter tout contact corporel avec des éléments mis à la terre comme tuyaux,
radiateurs, cuisinières ou réfrigérateurs. Les risques de choc électrique augmentent
lorsque le corps est mis Ă la terre.
c) Ne pas exposer les outils électriques à la pluie ou à l’humidité. Toute pénétration d’un
outil Ă©lectrique par un liquide augmente les risques de choc Ă©lectrique.
d) Ne pas utiliser le cordon de façon abusive. Ne jamais utiliser le cordon pour trans-
porter, tirer ou débrancher un outil électrique. Protéger le cordon de la chaleur,
de l’huile et de tout bord tranchant ou pièce mobile. Les cordons endommagés ou
emmêlés augmentent les risques de choc électrique. Remplacer ou faire réparer tout cor-
don endommagé. S’assurer que la rallonge est en bon état. N’utiliser que des rallonges
trifilaires munies de fiches tripolaires et des prises tripolaires acceptant la fiche de l’outil.
e) Lors de l’utilisation d’un outil électrique à l’extérieur, n’utiliser que des rallonges
conçues pour l’extérieur. L’utilisation d’une rallonge conçue pour l’extérieur réduit les
risques de choc électrique. En cas d’utilisation d’une rallonge, s’assurer que les valeurs
nominales de la rallonge utilisée correspondent bien à celles de l’outil alimenté. L’usage
d’une rallonge de calibre insuffisant causera une chute de tension entraînant perte de
puissance et surchauffe. Le tableau ci-dessous illustre les calibres Ă utiliser selon la lon-
gueur de rallonge et l’intensité nominale indiquée sur la plaque signalétique. En cas de
doutes, utiliser le calibre suivant. Plus le calibre est petit, plus la rallonge peut supporter
de courant.
